What a way to ring in the new year, than with a bomb cyclone. Actually, I could think of quite a few better ways to ring in the new year than this freezing cold, but this is like a photographer's wonderland! I personally have been wrestling with the idea of getting out of bed and baring the cold to take some winter photos... Here are some tips that I've learned in the past when it comes to cold weather photography.

It is always my favorite thing when I see that I can use my skills for good. A client of my mother's is starting this baking business for her son who was recently diagnosed with autism. And when I tell you that their cupcakes are phenomenal? It's hardly an overstatement.
Anyways, I had the lovely pleasure of creating a full media package for them to get started. Site, Instagram, email.. the works. You can check out the product pictures of those scrumptious desserts once the site officially goes live, but for now enjoy this super cute logo she made! If you look at my photos, especially on my Instagram, you'll realize that I love to take photos by the waterfront. There's something about water that is just so peaceful and reflective that allows you the serenity to think. Anyways, I was looking through my archives and found some gems from photos I took in my final days as a high school senior at Tabor Academy.
We had this tradition that all the seniors would make their way to the waterfront and watch the sun rise for a final time. At first when you think about it, it sounds pretty silly, but looking at these photos, and even though so many of them as shadow shots, in my opinion you can really feel the reflection that's going through the minds of the seniors as the look at this final sunrise as a student. That's why I like photography so much, because even five years later, and these photos can tell more of a story than I could to explain properly the emotions going through everyone that day. Time management is one of the most important tools that I have learned working in the field of media. Having multiple deadlines, various events and different companies to work for, tends to leave you stressed, so this is a very important skill to master quickly in order to be successful.
Today between all of the phone calls, and errands, I was able to escape for a few hours to watch Poops (my baby sister) sing in her graduation/moving up ceremony. Everyone that knows us, knows that Poops gets her diva status from me. Hair, nails, and outfits must be perfect before anyone will ever see her perform. So naturally, when I realized that the sound technicians were playing the wrong version of “America the Beautiful “, I nearly had a heart attack.
But of course, she handled it perfectly. She grabbed the mic, told them to cut the music, and sang a Capella. Because if they weren’t going to play the right version, she was not going to let that stop her from having an amazing performance, and let me tell you, she brought the house down. Watching this takes place reminded me about how much it relates to so many other scenarios. Mistakes and blunders are bound to happen, be it in life, or work, it’s how we deal with it that dyeing whether or not it is going to be a success or not. Here are a few tips to help you, when things don’t work out how they plan…
When people find out that I get to work from home a lot, the common response is “Oh my gosh! I’m so jealous, I would love to work from home!” but while working from home does have its perks it does have a couple of downsides too... hmmm, however the same can be said for working in an office. It’s one of those “the grass is greener on the other side” complexes; You always want what you don’t have. Below I’ve listed some pros and cons of working at home, and working in an office, and some tips I learned to make working in each type of setting the best.
Working From Home- Pro: Relaxed environment. Kick back, wear your pajamas, no one is going to see you, or judge you. Con: TOO relaxed of an environment. On days like today, where it’s Monday, quiet and slow, distractions like pillows and TV and even the refrigerator can get the best of you. Next thing you know, your deadline is an hour away, and you haven’t started yet Tip: Find your office space. That spot where distractions are at a minimal, and you know work will get done. (Shockingly, my bed is pretty conducive to getting work done) Pro: There is no commute. No need to wake up at the crack of dawn and get dressed in an uncomfortable outfit because your office is very close by, if not your bed! Con: Lack of human contact. Four walls can only bring you so much company, ya know? Tip: Take some breaks! Spread out your work so that you can meet with some friends for lunch, or do a quick game of pick up, or even play with your pet for a little bit. Just because you’re working at home doesn’t mean that you have to STAY at home. Working in an Office- Pro: There is always someone there to help you out. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, someone wants to help you. No one expects you to know how to do everything by yourself, use your resources around you. Con: Lack of privacy. With so many people crammed into these cubicle spaces, office gossip and drama is bound to find your way. Tip: Headphones are your best friend. Not everyone likes to get involved in drama and some just want to get all the work done before deadlines arrive. Pop in a pair of headphones with a playlist of your choice (For me, I like Spotify’s Unique Voices Playlist as my go to background music). Pro: Networking. All these people around you that are your superiors have years of experience, and you never know who has connections to what that can help you succeed. Con: People are not always what they seem. When new faces start popping up ans having long streaks of success, that can intimidate many people. Watch out, because you don’t know who is going to try and stab you in the back. Tip: Play your cards close to the vest for a while. Watch what you say to people, and about other co-workers. You never know what will come back to bite you in the behind! Hope this sheds some light on both sides of the fence. Which side do you prefer? Well, it's time to walk my dog! I guess it doesn't make sense to many as to why I would place a blog on my site, but here I hope to showcase more of the person behind the lens. Working in photography and cinematography I get to find myself working in beautiful locations and creating beautiful pictures and stories, but another specialty of mine is working in public relations and social media. I like to call my crossroads mediography. Mediography is using the content I create via video or photography to finish telling the story in times when I cannot.
I love using my skills to help someone establish their brand, document an event, advertise a new product or service and so much more, and I have lucked out and grown the skills to be able to do the process from beginning to end. Hopefully you enjoy this journey with me! |
